Vampire: The Masquerade and How to Agree to Play the same Game

In one of my former articles a discussion arose that Vampire: The Masquerade offers a multitude of approaches in how it can be played in regards to genre, style and theme. It’s an aspect of the game that Martin Ericsson discussed and explored in his panel „White Wolf – 50 Shades of Darkness„.

The conversation I had was focused on the aspect that it does occasionally appears as difficult if not impossible to agree beforehand and that thus the game might turn into a disappointment.

In this article I’ll address the topic and aim to provide aides.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #94, including every tabletop project started between 01/20 and 01/27.

Usually I don’t put German projects front and forward in the English version of the Crowdfunding Collection, yet Roll Inclusive: Diversity und Repräsentation im Rollenspiel is really near and dear to my heart. Thus, if you are interested in inclusivity from a German perspective, if you understand German or if you want to support the creators, I recommend the project wholeheartedly.
Among the English projects Wolfspell stood out to me because of the cool artwork and the idea to play humans who transform into wolfs – without being werewolves.  Zorro does look cool as well, yet am not a fan of the swashbuckling genre or the titular hero and hence just suggest to check the game out if you are. In Name Only doesn’t wow me with great illustration, but the rules-light story game appears well worth giving it a closer look.
Among the other projects I am most enticed by the first three dice ones, which look quite stunning. Though I do recommend that you take a glance at all the other projects as well:

Crowdfunding Kurzübersicht #94

Es gibt eine frische Crowdfunding Kurzübersicht #94 (Zeitraum: 20.01 bis 27.01).

In dieser Kurzübersicht gibt es mit Roll Inclusive: Diversity und Repräsentation im Rollenspiel ein deutschsprachiges Projekt das mir sehr am Herzen liegt. Es beschäftigt sich, wie der Titel bereits angibt, mit Vielvältigkeit, Repräsentation und Inklusivität in Bezug auf unser Hobby. Dahingehend bietet es mehr als 17 Essays von mehr als 16 Autor*innen. Man erhält zu Gedanken wie man Gruppen als solche offener und zugänglicher gestalten kann – das man bei Convention Runden für zweifarbige Sets nicht nur rote und grüne Würfel anbietet – und Ideen wie man das Spiel als solches so gestaltet das sich keiner unabsichtlich ausgegrenzt und abgestossen fühlt. Meiner Meinung nach ein gutes und wichtiges Buch, das vielleicht auch dann hilft wenn man denkt das man es schon sehr gut hinbekommt.
Daneben finden sich unter den englischen mit Wolfspell, ein Spiel in dem sich Menschen in Wölfe verwandeln können und Abenteuer bestehen, ein spannendes Spiel das optisch sehr ansprechend ist. Zorro ist ebenso optisch ansprechend und bietet Fans eine Aufbereitung der Welt von Zorro, nachdem ich mich für Zorro weniger begeistern kann, empfehle ich Enthusiasten des Mantel & Degen Genre einfach einen Blick. In Name Only ist meiner Meinung nach nicht so hübsch wie die anderen beiden, dennoch als regelleichtes Story Spiel sicherlich einen Blick wert. Zumal es ähnlich wie Wolfsspell nur noch kurze Zeit läuft.
Von den weiteren Projekte finde ich vorallem die ersten drei Würfelprojekte super hübsch, empfehle allerdings auch einen Blick auf die Ergänzungsbände, Abenteuer und all die weiteren Projekte:

Crowdfunding Collection #93

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #93, including every tabletop project started between 01/14 till 01/20.

This time around I’ll have two projects from Germany, one in English.
The one in Englisch is ADOM, which transforms the old CRPG classic by the same name into a tabletop rpg, while I do not know the original game the project looks okay. Die Schwarze Katze is a game in which one assumes the role of a sentient, two-legged cat in the world of The Dark Eye. The presentation is excellent, I followed its development for years and one can even play vampire cats! thus I am backing it. I would say, have a look at it if you like cats ^^
Back to the English games, I recommend Vulcania, it looks cool and had me coin the term „vulcan punk“. Why… Why not? If you are more a fan of cyberpunk take a look at Carbon 2185. It looks charming and promising. Then again maybe you want to play a dragon in modern time, then you should take a look at Lex Draconis. Well, and if you like more some Indy-like action in the 30s, check out Destination Danger.
Next to the games and as a big WoD fan I do wholeheartidly recommend backing the Patreon of Mr Gone, Chris creates and shares excellent character sheets and he deseveres the support. I am as well enamord with the Damsels, Dice, and Everything Nice project, as I greatly enjoy their first episode.

Es gibt eine frische Crowdfunding Kurzübersicht #93 (Zeitraum: 14.01 bis 20.01).

In dieser Kurzübersicht gibt es gleich drei Kickstarter aus Deutschland, zwei davon auf Deutsch.
Die Schwarze Katze ist ein Rollenspiel in der Welt Aventurien, also DSA, bei dem man in die Rolle von anthropomorphen Katzen schlüpft. Die Idee ist cool, die Illustrationen sind genial, ich verfolge die Entwicklung schon seit mehreren Jahren, man kann Vampir-Katzen spielen und es gibt ein Buch mit Fell – ich bin sooo dabei und empfehle es.
Bei dem Schummelabenteuer handelt es sich um ein Crowdfunding Projekt des Erzählspiel-Projekt, von Tina und Gerrit, bei dem ein kleines, erzählerisches Rollenspiel finanziert werden soll. Das ganze sieht ausgezeichnet aus und der Umstand das es während dem Gratisrollenspieltag 2019 verteilt wird, hilft dem Hobby. Daher eine klare Empfehlung.
Das weitere Rollenspiel aus Deutschland, The ADOM ist auf Englisch und setzt ein populäres, isometrisches Computer-RPG um. Es sieht durchaus interessant aus, und ist für Fantasy Fans einen Blick wert. Mit Vulcania gibt es dazu ein weiteres Spiel im Bereich Fantasy, bzw. wie ich es nenne „Vulkanpunk“. Mich spricht es hauptsächlich über die Optik an.
Fans von Cyberpunk sollten einen Blick auf Carbon 2185 haben, das ebenfalls gut aussieht und düstere Action verspricht. Wohingegen man bei Lex Draconis als Drachen in der Gegenwart umher fliegen kann und in Destination Danger Indiana Jones Action in den 30ern hat.
Daneben begeistert mich als World of Darkness Fan natürlich der Patreon von Mr Gone. Auch Damsels, Dice, and Everything Nice mag ich empfehlen, nachdem mir die erste Episode ausgezeichnet gefiel. Aber auch die weiteren Projekte haben einen Blick verdient:

Crowdfunding Collection #92

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #92, including every tabletop project started between 01/07 till 01/13.

Amon the games this time round you’ll find Land Under the Flames. A game with a fantasy setting which will see the players character and tribe develop through the years and epochs. The setting and concept sounds interesting, yet the information regarding the system is a bit scarce – maybe to be found on the games website. I personally do like The Bone Marshes a bit more. It’s closer to actually being a fantasy rpg adventure, yet it does come with a small OSR-like system of its own to help one explore marshes in hex’es. Then there Clockwork Depths, which combines tabletop rpg and LARP with a setting of their own. It’s an alternative world to our own, with lot more of underwater action and some (in my opinion) steampunk influences. The last of the games, Station Keepers, offers quite and interesting approach to Kickstarter next to its Science Fiction setting. While the game will be about the characters trying to loot a space station under the creators watch, neither the system nor the setting has been formulated it. Which isn’t unintentional bad Kickstarter design, but an experiment by the creator. Though am hesitant about it, as money is involved.

Crowdfunding Kurzübersicht #92

Es gibt eine frische Crowdfunding Kurzübersicht #92 (Zeitraum: 07.01 bis 13.01).

Unter den Rollenspielen findet sich diesmal Land Under the Flames. Ein Fantasy Rollenspiel, bei dem man wohl seinen Stamm über Jahre bzw. Epochen spielt und entwickelt. Ein an sich interessantes Projekt, auch wenn der Kickstarter eher sehr sparsam mit Informationen zum tatsächlichen System umgeht. The Bone Marshes spricht mich hingegen schon mehr an. Eigentlich ein Fantasy Abenteuer, kommt es doch mit einem eigenen, kleinen System daher und wirkt als würde es auch allgemein spannende Mechaniken bieten. Clockwork Depths wiederum vereint Pen & Paper Rollenspiel und LARP mit einem eigenen Setting, und bietet eine Alternative Welt mit recht viel Wasser und was ich „Steampunk“ nennen würde. Es sieht durchaus spannend aus. Das letzte Rollenspiel Station Keepers bietet neben dem SF-Setting, bei denen man Kreaturen auf einer Raumstation spielt, welche versuchen die Raumstation unter den eigentlichen Besitzern wegzuplündern, den „spannenden“ Kickstarteransatz, das weder Setting noch Spiel geschrieben sind. Das ganze ist wohl eine Art Experiment, ein nicht uninteressantes, aber auch eins das die Unterstützer halt Geld kostet.

I present to you the new Crowdfunding Collection #91, including every tabletop project started between 01/01 till 01/06.

A happy New Year to everyone and welcome to the first collection of  2019.
I do really like the rpg Patreon project by Liz and Steffie. While the project isn’t dedicated to a single game, by the nature of Patreon, I am really curious what the two will produce and look forward to those games.
f you like the Era games, you might be happy that you got the chance to lay your hands on a limited edition of Era: Lyres. Adventure Post was a bit of a chellenging project. It isn’t a straight up tabletop rpg, but got some other game elements. I still think it is worth having a look.
As well as the ‚TWAS – The Krampus Night Before Christmas gamebook by Jonathan Green, who I backed previously for his gamebook take on Alice in Wonderland. He is a good creator, and I recommend checking the project out.
The Deco Dice by Mark Kelly didn’t only get to be the „preview/cover project“, but it is the only project I backed. The dice look super cool, Mark is a gifted artist and a nice person and I watched the project preparation for month. Thus it comes with the highest recommendations from my part.
